漫長的冬天即將過去，受人雇佣的農夫Jo開始清理雞舍，沒想到稻草堆下的地板竟然已經結了冰，去年受到一群野狗攻擊而唯一倖存的紅色小母雞，牠的腳趾因此被凍掉了而成了「異類」。因為和大家不一樣，這隻小母雞註定會受到其他母雞的攻擊而無法存活下來，雖然是個「麻煩」，Jo不顧大老闆的勸阻，還是想辦法將牠留了下來。Jo想辦法給牠裝「義肢」，又不斷實驗、觀察牠是否有可能回歸雞群，重新被接納。就在這個時候，一隻流浪的黑狗也來到了農場，忙得焦頭爛額的Jo沒有其他選擇，只能開車將牠載往遠方野放，沒想到好幾次，這隻黑狗都能找到回農場的路。聰明的黑狗知道Jo不能接納牠，於是在穀倉的角落躲了起來，同時扮演起小母雞保護者的角色。
故事最後，Jo發現公雞似乎被某種動物攻擊，雞蛋也被吃了，珍愛的紅色小母雞也不見了，當他發現黑狗的蹤跡時，以為牠就是殺死小母雞的兇手，他說：
‘You know, I could have killed you that
first moment in the hen house, but I talked again, talked myself out of it…But
hanged if I talk myself into keeping you. I could forgive your stealing eggs
and killing the rooster, but there’s one thing remains- if you came back, if
you were here all these days, then you killed my little red hen, and that’s
something I can’t forgive and won’t talk myself out of…’
有誰看到這裡，不會深切感受到Jo心中對那隻「區區」小母雞感到的傷痛呢?
除了描述動物的心理與行為生動鮮明之外(作者對雞隻的生活與狗的心態絕對有深刻的觀察)，這個故事最突出的是Jo對動物的人道關懷。大老闆要Jo幫忙安撫他的名貴母馬、幫忙接生小馬，卻要Jo直接把不值錢的紅色小母雞殺了煮來吃，省得浪費時間，因為’farming
is business’，再也忍不住的Jo不禁對他大喊：
‘Could you have killed and eaten that mare-
supposing you liked horse meat- if something had happened to her that night the
colt was coming?’
大老闆嚇了一跳說：
‘You’re talking about a
three-thousand-dollar mare- not a chicken.’
Jo慷慨激昂的說：
‘A five-thousand-dollar mare or a two-cent
chicken, what is the difference? And id I didn’t pet and try to understand a
two-cent hen, what do you think I’d have been worth that night with the mare
and colt when you were chewing your fingernails to the knuckles?’
原來因為Jo那天晚上成功地安撫了那匹母馬，小馬出世後，大老闆以高價又將母馬賣出，大大賺了一筆。
簡單的文字、感人的力量，依然是Maurice Sendak所做的簡單質樸的插圖。
